The Foolz
The Foolz is a six-piece that has been performing hour-long shows since 1992. In these shows, both newer and older Zappa-songs are played, often with seamless transitions in between. Just like Zappa himself, The Foolz draw their influences from a lot of different styles of music, occasionally with shared vocal harmonies and a lot of the Zappa-solo’s we’ve all come to know and love.
The Foolz have succesfully performed on a lot of different festivals, including (but not limited to) two separate performances at the Zappanale-festival in Germany.
The band hails from Apeldoorn and consists of:

The Lex L. Bronkowitz Orchestra
Lex Bronkowitz war zwölf Jahre alt, als er sich mit dem Zappa-Virus infizierte. Die Alben Lumpy Gravy und Sheik Yerbouti eröffneten dem jungen Gitarristen ein neues musikalisches Universum. Die Komplexität der Kompositionen und die Freiheit von Frank Zappas Gitarrenspiel waren für ihn Irritation und Offenbarung zugleich.
Bronkowitz, damals Gitarrist der Band Strange (u.a. Rock am Ring, Strange Noise Festival), hörte sich durch das umfangreiche Werk Zappas und wollte sich bald noch eingehender mit der Musik seines Meisters befassen.
Seit 1998 entstanden in seinem Hamburger Homestudio dutzende Re-Arrangements von Zappa-Kompositionen.
Damals schon mit von der Partie war als Sängerin seine Schwester Katharina Debus, die sich später unter anderem durch ihre Zusammenarbeit mit Bobby McFerrin einen internationalen Namen machte.
2011 begeisterte er namhafte Musiker für eine Live Besetzung des Lex Bronkowitz Orchestra: Peter Thomas und Roman Storch (Principals bei Lion King), Johnny Johnson und Philipp Kacza (Jan Delay & Disko No.1), Sebastian Borkowski (Jazzanova) und Katharina Debus (Slixs). Mit ihnen entstand die Debut-CD Strictly Gravy, die das niederländische Label FZIO 2013 in Europa veröffentlichte. Frank Zappas Musik wird zerlegt und von Bronkowitz neu kombiniert, reharmonisiert und in einen groove-orientierten Kontext gestellt. Dadurch – und nicht zuletzt durch die unverwechselbare Stimme seiner Schwester – entsteht der charakteristische Bronkowitz-Sound.
Auch für die aktuelle Besetzung konnte Bronkowitz erstklassige Musiker gewinnen. Seit 2014 gehören neben Philip Mestwerdt am Schlagzeug und Frieder Loch am Rhodes/Moog/Clavinet weiterhin der langjährige Bronkowitz-Bassist Carl Albrecht und die Sängerin Katharina Debus fest zum Lex Bronkowitz Orchestra. Weitere Konzerte und CD-Produktionen sind in Planung.

Festival Zappaloween met The Foolz

Op vrijdag 30 en zaterdag 31 oktober vindt de tweede editie van het festival Zappaloween plaats in Art café Sam Sam.
De Apeldoornse band The FoolZ is verantwoordelijk voor de organisatie.
Tijdens het festival spelen verschillende bands op verschillende manieren het werk van Frank Zappa, of muziek die daarop is geïnspireerd.
De hoofdacts zijn de Apeldoornse band The FoolZ en het uit Hamburg afkomstige Lex L. Bronkowitz Orchestra.
Het beloven twee bijzondere en onvergetelijke avonden te worden vol horror, humor en bovenal griezelig goede muziek.

Festival
De eerste versie van Zappaloween in 2010 was een bescheiden maar succesvolle avond. Veel liefhebbers uit het land wisten de weg naar Sam Sam te vinden en de zaal ‘Het kerkje’ stond goed vol. Vijf jaar later pakt de organisatie het grootser aan: twee avonden, twee hoofdacts en verschillende ‘kleinere’ bandjes. Natuurlijk is de zaal voorzien van passende griezeldecoratie. Bezoekers betalen geen toegang. Passende kleding is niet vereist, maar wordt wel aangemoedigd.

FoolZ
The Foolz is een hooggewaardeerde Zappa-coverband. De band, waarvan de leden bijna allemaal in Apeldoorn wonen, speelt al meer dan vijfentwintig jaar samen. Tijdens concerten worden in navolging van Frank Zappa veel nummers zonder onderbreking gespeeld. Op het repertoire staan zowel vocale als instrumentale stukken van diverse albums en er is veel ruimte voor solo’s. In 2003 bracht de groep de cd Live in the Cherrytree uit, opgenomen in het Apeldoornse Bluescafé. De band is ook internationaal bekend; zo verzorgden zij bijzondere optredens tijdens de Zappateers-festivals in Bradford-on-Avon (2007) en Corby (2013) in Groot Brittannië en traden zij tweemaal op tijdens het Europese topfestival Zappanale in Bad Doberan (Duitsland). Sinds januari 2015 is de band uitgebreid met een zesde muzikant: percussioniste Linda Blom.
Tijdens Zappaloween spelen The FoolZ twee keer in volledige samenstelling. Tijdens die twee optredens verwelkomen zij verschillende gastmuzikanten. Gitarist Lex Kemper speelt ook nog samen met Bruno Rombouts een akoestische set in het voorprogramma op zaterdag. Toetsenist Wan Kemper en drummer Marco Onstenk hebben speciaal voor deze gelegenheid een muzikaal eerbetoon aan Zappa geproduceerd, gebaseerd op de vele markante uitspraken die hun held ooit heeft gedaan.

Lex L. Bronkowitz Orchestra
De in Hamburg wonende Alexander Debus werd op twaalfjarige leeftijd met het Zappa-virus geïnfecteerd. De complexiteit van de composities, de vrijheid in het gitaarspel en de grote diversiteit in stijlen openden een muzikaal universum. Debus werd gitarist van de band Strange en speelde onder andere op het Rock am Ring en het Strange Noise Festival. Vanaf 1998 begon hij in zijn thuisstudio met het arrangeren en opnemen van het werk van Frank Zappa. Die opnames verspreidde hij op kleine schaal. Al snel kregen de liefhebbers lucht van de bijzondere manier waarop Alexander allerlei fragmenten van verschillende composities in zijn nummers stopt en zijn werk wordt dan ook hoog gewaardeerd onder de Zappa-kenners. Sinds 2011 speelt hij zijn bewerkingen ook voor publiek. De band bestaat uit hooggeschoolde muzikanten met een speciale rol voor zangeres en zus Katharina Debus. Pas in 2013 verscheen het eerste (en tot nu toe enige) volwaardige album Strictly Gravy waarmee hij grote indruk maakte.

Zappa
Frank Zappa is een icoon in de hedendaagse muziek. De Amerikaanse componist, gitarist, bandleider, filmmaker, sociaal commentator en satiricus (1950-1992) bracht tijdens zijn leven meer dan zestig albums uit vol pop, rock, jazz, klassiek en avant-garde. Halloween had altijd een bijzondere betekenis voor hem; in de jaren zeventig en tachtig vierde hij die feestdag steevast in New York. Die concerten uit liepen vaak uit op monsterlange evenementen vol bizarre en extravagante gebeurtenissen en zijn inmiddels legendarisch.
Zappaloween houdt een stukje van die Zappatraditie in ere.

Experience Zappa in the theatre:
Percussion ensemble KNA Lunteren and Zappa cover band The Foolz have joined forces to present a unique musical venture: Zappa Experience! On Saturday the 8th of November they will collectively present a theater show in the Schaffelaartheater in Barneveld. As the name implies, this show is geared entirely towards the works of composer, musician and filmmaker Frank Zappa. In a variety of set-ups a wide array of compositions made by Zappa will be performed. Prior to this musical experience renowned Zappa expert Co de Kloet will provide an in-depth lecture about Zappa’s life and works.

Percussion ensemble KNA Lunteren:
The KNA percussion ensemble consists of roughly thirty dedicated musicians led by conductor Marco Ostenk. Since the year 2000 the orchestra has been preoccupied with concerts and concourses, consistently delivering musical performances of an impressive level. In 2009 the orchestra even became Dutch champion in its discipline and also partook in the World Music Concourse. Their repertoire is characterized by a large variety of styles, encompassing pop and rock, but also more blues-oriented styles of music. Now Zappa’s vintage blend of jazz and rock can be added to their already broad range of skills. In sum: the KNA ensemble is not afraid to embrace variation and new challenges!

The Foolz:
Cover band The Foolz is committed entirely to the work of Frank Zappa. The band, consisting of Pedro Steneker (bass/vocals), Lex Kemper (guitar/vocals), Remco Aalhuizen (guitar/vocals), Wan Kemper (keys/vocals) and Marco Onstenk (drums), is a well-respected name amongst Zappa aficionados. In 2003 they released their live album “Live from the Cherrytree”. Furthermore, they performed multiple times at the acclaimed ‘Zappanale’ festival and also made much lauded appearances at Zappateers-organized festivals in Bradford-On-Avon and Corby.

Lecture:
Many people are vaguely familiar with the name of Frank Zappa, but only few know just exactly who he was. Hence, preceding the concert, radio presenter and Holland’s most famed Zappa expert Co de Kloet will provide us with a lecture concerning the life and works of Zappa. Zappa challenged many a musical convention and in doing so merged musical styles that previously seemed irreconcilable. In an engaging fashion Co de Kloet will invite the audience into the mind of the composer, demonstrate his working method, and elucidate Zappa’s socio-political brand of lyricism. De Kloet’s lecture thus promises to be an inspiring experience for Zappa novices and adepts alike.

Zappa Experience:
Further into the night things will get even more inspiring as, over the course of two hours, the musicians will allow the audience a glimpse into the musical universe of Frank Zappa. Here, previously attained knowledge will be heard and seen in practice. The ensemble and the band will separately and collectively perform pieces of Zappa’s work, touching on all aspects of his impressive oeuvre. Some songs of note that will be performed include: ‘Echidna’s Arf’, ‘Little Umbrellas’, ‘T’mershi Duween’ and ‘What’s New in Baltimore’.
