Potjandosie, het kostte me heel wat tijd om uit te vinden hoe ik dat kleine cirkeltje op die ‘a’ moet zetten en nog is het niet gelukt. Ik ben het Zweeds dan ook niet machtig. Maar allemensen, wat ziet deze dame er op de hoesfoto schoon uit. En dan heb ik het nog niet eens gehad over wat ze op deze cd doet.
Ik heb Visor Fran Vinden (Liederen Van De Zolder) nu twee keer gedraaid en ik ben bijzonder onder de indruk. Sofia Karlsson maakt stemmige folkliederen. Ze heeft een prachtige, wat breekbare, maar heldere en indringende stem.
Het openingslied is een Zweedse vertaling van Charles Baudelaires Les Vin Des Amants en zet de toon voor de rest de cd. Het hele album is trouwens nogal poëtisch. De instrumentatie is bijna geheel akoestisch. Sofia speelt fluiten, bouzouki, Hammond en traporgel. De overige muzikanten staan haar bij met citer, strijkinstrumenten, basklarinet en slagwerk.
We horen vrolijke folkliedjes, maar ook stemmige ballads. Opvallend is de bijdrage van pianiste Sofie Livebrant, die ook veel van de muziek schreef.
Dit is een bijzonder sfeervolle plaat die niet alleen op zondagochtend prettig aandoet!

Damn, it took me quite some time to find out how to put that small circle on top of the ‘a’, and I still haven’t succeeded. Swedish is not my language. But lawd, does this lady look beautiful on the cover picture! And I haven’t said anything yet on what she does on the cd itself.
I’ve played Visor Fran Vinden (Songs from the attic) twice now and I’m very impressed. Sofia Karlsson performs moody folksongs. She has a gorgeous, bit fragile, but clear and intense voice.
The opening song is a Swedish translation of Charles Baudelaire’s Les Vind Des Amants and sets the tone for the rest of the cd. By the way, the whole album is kind of poetic. The instrumentation is almost completely acoustic. Sofia plays flutes, bouzouki, Hammond and harmonium. The other musicians support her with citer, string instruments, bass clarinet and percussion.
Happy folktunes but also moody ballads are to be heard. There is a major contribution of piano player Sofie Livebrant, who also wrote a lot of music on this album.
This is a remarkably atmospheric album that isn’t only nice to be heard on a Sunday!

Oooooh! Dit is de tweede plaat die de jonge knul Zach Condon uitbrengt onder de naam Beirut. Hij is totaal bevangen door de Romana-muziek en ook op deze plaat is dat veelvuldig te horen. Was het eerste album Gulag Orkester nog wat jengelig vanwege de trompet die de stem voortdurend dubbelt; hier is alles perfect in balans. We horen invloeden uit balkan- en zigeunermuziek, maar ook uit de Joodse traditie. Dit alles is overgoten met een jaren twintig/dertig sfeertje. De sfeer is nog steeds triest, maar nergens wordt het té. Troostrijk is een beter woord. Enige minpuntje aan dit meesterwerk: met achtendertig minuten is het natuurlijk véél te kort!

Ooo0h! This is the second album that young bloke Zach Condon releases under the name of Beirut. He’s totally hooked on the Romana music and on this new album you can hear that intensely. The first album Gulag Orkester was a bit too much soaring because of the trumpet constantly doubling the voice; here everything is very well balanced. We hear influences from Balkan and gypsy music, but also from the Jewish tradition. Everything is surrounded by a 20s or 30s atmosphere. Overall the mood is sad, but it never gets too exaggerated. It’s comforting, that’s a better expression to it. The only negative thing about this masterpiece is its length: of course 38 minutes is way too short!
