Potjandosie, en zo zit ik hier ineens met een enorm mooie cd/dvd-box in mijn poten.
Een box van de band die zorgde voor een keerpunt in mijn muzikale jeugd. Het verhaal over Peter Gunn heb ik al eens elders gepubliceerd en wel hier.
Zevenendertig jaar nadat de band werd opgericht en negen jaar na het laatste teken van leven verschijnt dan From The Beginning. Vijf cd’s en een dvd. De échte verzamelaar had natuurlijk al het reguliere materiaal al, maar deze box zit zó vol met waardevolle extra’s, dat die verstokte ELP-fan er toch weer aan moet geloven. Zoals ik.
In tegenstelling tot de eerdere box The Return Of The Manticore uit 1995 is deze verzameling chronologisch samengesteld. We beginnen bij het begin in 1969 en eindigen bij de laatste concerten van 1998.
De eerste schijf gaat helemaal in op het ontstaan van de band en de eerste stappen in de studio en op het podium. We horen allereerst een stuk van King Crimson, Atomic Rooster en The Nice. Nummers waarin achtereenvolgens Greg Lake, Carl Palmer en Keith Emerson hun wortels goed laten horen: de lyrische zang in Epitaph, het creatieve drumwerk in Death And Decline en de maniakale orgelklanken in Fantasia: Intermezzo Karelia Suite. Daarna een paar nummers van de debuutplaat Emerson Lake & Palmer. De cd eindigt met drie stukken van het concert in Londen, opgenomen op 9 december 1970.
De tweede disc begint met Tarkus, toch een ijkpunt in het ELP-repertoire. Verderop horen we een onuitgegeven lied uit de Tarkus-sessies: Oh My Father. Het is zo op het eerste gehoor een wat weinigzeggend gitaarnummertje. Opvallend is dat de hele LP Pictures At An Exhibition wordt overgeslagen. Wél veel aandacht is er voor Trilogy uit 1972. Van Brain Salad Surgery horen we eerste versies van Jerusalem en Still … You Turn Me On.
Disc drie opent met het gigantische Karn Evil 9, en gaat dan verder met het Works-verhaal. Wat solomateriaal – zo staat Emerson’s Piano Concerto No. 1 er in zijn geheel op –  en een live versie van Pirates uit de 1978 tour. Zónder orkest, want dat was wegens financiële problemen al naar huis gestuurd.
De vierde schijf gaat in op de latere periode. Van Love Beach uit 1978 horen we alleen Canario en van In Concert (later uitgebreid en omgedoopt tot Works Live) het eerder genoemde Peter Gunn. In 1979 gingen Emerson ,Lake en Palmer ieder hun eigen weg. In 1986 kwamen Emerson en Lake even bij elkaar om samen met Cozy Powell een album op te nemen. We horen hier Mars – The Bringer Of War. Twee jaar later formeerden Emerson en Palmer met Robert Berry de band ‘3’ en van dat album vinden we hier Desde La Vida. In 1993 volgde dan de échte reünie Black Moon. Van dit album een tweetal stukken en iets van de liveplaat At The Royal Albert Hall. Het laatste studio-album stamt uit 1995. In The Hot Seat was een draak van een plaat, zoals de twee stukken laten horen. De vierde schijf sluit af met Hang On To A Dream van de 1995 Manticore-sessies, en Touch And Go van het in 1998 verschenen album Live In Poland.
Het vijfde plaatje is de parel in de hele box. Hierop vinden we het complete concert dat de band gaf in Mar y Sol in Puerto Rico op 3 januari 1972. Take A Pebble verscheen in dat jaar op een verzamelplaat van het Atlantic label. Sindsdien wachtten de liefhebbers tot het concert in zijn geheel uitgegeven zou worden. Bij deze dan. Het geluid is prachtig geremastered; de synths in Tarkus knallen echt door de kamer. De opnames geven een goed beeld van hoe een concert in die tijd geweest moet zijn.
De zesde schijf is de dvd The Manticore Special, een documentaire over de waanzinnige tournee uit 1973, toen de band de wereld rondtrok om hun meesterwerk Brain Salad Surgery te promoten. Ik had al een eerdere dvd-versie van deze film en ik kan nog niet veel kwaliteitsverschil opmerken.

Is deze box essentieel? Ik ben geneigd om de vraag positief te beantwoorden. De eerdere box The Return Of The Manticore ging maar tot 1993, maar heeft weer andere extra’s in onuitgegeven werk en een zestal opnieuw opgenomen stukken dat wel erg spettert. Daar staat tegenover dat die box verder niet chronologisch is en dus een rommeltje. From The Beginning begint wél bij het begin en zo kun je de ontwikkeling van de band in al zijn details goed volgen. Het bijvoegen van het complete Mar y Sol-concert, waarvan de fans al jaren hoopten dat het ooit eens in zijn totaliteit uitgebracht zou worden, maakt de aanschaf helemaal de moeite waard. Voeg daarbij de prachtige vormgeving en het uitgebreide boek dat louter gevuld is met commentaar van de drie muzikanten zelf. Zestig pleuro. Geen geld.

Holy moly, and so I’m here sitting with a wonderful cd/dvd-box in my filthy hands. A box full of music by the band that meant a turning point in my musical youth. I’ve published my story on Peter Gunn somewhere else. Sadly it’s only in Dutch, but for those of you who’d like to give it a try, it’s here. From The Beginning appears thirty seven years after the band got together and nine years after the last signs of life. Five cd’s and a dvd. The real collector obviously already has all the regular albums, but this box set is só full of precious extras that even the most fanatic collector has to fall for it. Just like me.
In contradiction to the earlier box set The Return Of The Manticore from 1995, this collection is chronological. We start in 1969 and finish at the last concerts in 1998.
The first disc entirely focusses on the birth of the band and their first steps in the studio and on stage. First we hear a song by King Crimson, Atomic Rooster and The Nice. Pieces in which respectively Greg Lake, Carl Palmer en Keith Emerson play us their roots. The lyrical vocal in Epitaph, the creative drumming in Death And Decline and maniac organsounds in Fantasia: Intermezzo from Karelia Suite. Then there’s some major pieces from the debut album Emerson Lake & Palmer. The disc ends with three tunes from a concert in Londen, recorded on December 9, 1970.
The second disc opens with Tarkus, undoubtly a signature piece in the ELP-repertoire. Further on we hear a previously unreleased song from the Tarkus-sessions: Oh My Father. On first hearing it’s a simple guitar song. Sadly the whole album Pictures At An Exhibition is neglected in this box. On the other hand, there’s lots of attention for Trilogy from 1972. Brain Salad Surgery is represented by the early versions of Jerusalem and Still … You Turn Me On.
Disc three opens with the the majestic Karn Evil 9, and continues with the story of the Works albums. Some solo material –  Emerson’s Piano Concerto No. 1 is presented in its entirety – and a live version of Pirates recorded during the 1978 tour. Without the orchestra that is, for that was already sent home because of financial problems.
The forth disc describes the later era of the band. From Love Beach from 1978 we only hear Canario‘ and from In Concert (later expanded and rebaptised to Works Live) the aforementioned Peter Gunn. In 1979 Emerson ,Lake and Palmer each followed their own path for some years. In 1986 Emerson and Lake regrouped to record an album with Cozy Powell. It is represented here by Mars –  The Bringer Of War. Two years later Emerson and Palmer formed a band called ‘3’ withRobert Berry, and from that album comes Desde La Vida. The real reunion happened in 1993 with the album Black Moon. Two songs from that album and one tune from Live At The Royal Albert Hall. The last studio-album was recorded in 1995. In The Hot Seat was not a very good album, as the two songs let us hear. The forth disc closes with Hang On To A Dream from the 1995 Manticore-sessions, and Touch And Go, taken from the 1998 release Live In Poland.
The fifthe disc is the pearl in the entire box set. Here we find the complete concert that the band played in Mar y Sol in Puerto Rico on January 3, 1972. Take A Pebble appeared that year on a sampler LP on the Atlantic label. From that moment on, the fans have waited patiently untill the moment this show would be released completely. Here it is. The sound is beautifully remastered; the synths blow into the room from out of the speakers. These recordings give us a good impression of an ELP show in that period.
The sixth disc is the dvd The Manticore Special, a documentary on the crazy world tour in 1973, when the band travelled the world to promote their masterpiece Brain Salad Surgery. I had already an earlier dvd-version of this film and I cannot notice any change in image and/or sound quality yet.

Is this box set essential? I’ve been considering this and my conclusion is positive. The previous box set The Return Of The Manticore had material until 1993, but contains different extras and unreleased recordings, and six brand new rerecorded songs that sound very good. On the other hand, that compilation doesn’t have a chronological running order, which makes it kind of messy.
From The Beginning does start at the beginning of the band, and thus one can follow the details of their developments of the band’s career. The addition of the complete Mar y Sol-concert, a show the fans hoped to be released in its entirety for years and years, makes this box set worthwhile to have. Besides that, the art work is stunning and the extensive booklet filled with comments by the three musicians themselves. Sixty euros. A Cheopo.

Travelling Wilburys 

Herinnert u ze zich nog? De Travelling Wilberys was een ‘supergroep’ die bekend werd met het hitje Handle with care. Het verhaal erachter is hilarisch. George Harrison was bezig met een soloplaat die geproduceerd zou worden door Jeff Lynne (u weet wel, van Electric Light Orchestra). Hij had een singletje in gedachten en wilde een bijzonder b-kantje maken. Omdat Tom Petty en Roy Orbison op dat moment ook in het studiocomplex aanwezig waren (Lynne produceerde ook hun platen), vroeg Harisson of zij ook mee wilden werken. Tijdens een schrijfsessie in de tuin van Bob Dylan werd het nummer afgemaakt als quintet. De platenmaatschappij vroeg zich af of het b-kantje niet een a-kantje kon worden en toen zei Harrison: ‘Ach wat, we maken gewoon een heel album.’ De rest is geschiedenis.
Deze box bevat de eerste plaat met de bonusnummers, een dvd met een documentaire over het ontstaan van de band en een derde plaatje met het tweede album. Dat tweede album ontbeert de huilstem van Roy Orbison, omdat die op het moment van opnemen verhinderd was (hij was dood), maar is in zijn rauwheid ook goed te pruimen. De dvd is interessant; intrigerend om de schrijf- en opnamesessies te zien. En opmerkelijk hoeveel plezier de vijf mannen hadden. Ook interessant: de prijs van dit geheel. Voor nog geen vijfentwintig ballen is dit stukje muziekgeschiedenis uw eigendom.

Do you remember them? The Travelling Wilburys were a ‘supergroup’ that got famous with the hit single Handle with care. The story behind that song is hiareous. George Harisson was recording a solo album that was going to be produced by Jeff Lynne (you know, from Electric Light Orchestra). He had a single in mind and wanted a special b-side song. It appeared that Tom Petty and Roy Orbison were in the same recording studio building at that time (Lynne was producing their album too), so Harisson asked them to join in too. During a writing session in Bob Dylan’s garden, the song was finished as a quintet. When the record company was wondering whether this tune should be the a-side instead of the b-side, Harisson said: ‘What the heck, let’s make a whole album.’ The rest is history. 
This box set contains the first album with bonus tracks, a dvd with a documentary on the birth of the band, and a third disc that contains the second album. That second album lacks the crying voice of Roy Orbison, because he wasn’t present at the time of recording (he was dead), but is very listenable because of its rawness. The dvd especially is interesting; it’s intruiging to see the writing and recording sessions. And remarkable to notice the fun these five men had. Also interesting: the price of it all. For less than twenty five pleuros this piece of music history can be your property.

Gebaseerd op een fietstocht die DJ Dunkelbunt maakte van Wenen naar Athene. Hij noteerde al zijn indrukken en verwerkte die in zijn muziek. Zo hoor je ook allerlei veldopnames. Het maakt het geheel tot een bonte mix van slome dance, opzwepende Balkanmuziek en maffe Duitse teksten. Niet alles is even kaleidoscopisch, maar als geheel is dit een interessant project.

Based on a journey that DJ Dunkelbunt made on a bike. He travelled from Vienna to Athens and noted all his impressions to put them into his music. We hear several field recordings. That makes this album a special mix of slow dance, hot Balkan music and silly German lyrics. Not everything is as caleidoscopic as some parts, but as a whole it’s an interesting project.

 Oei. Ik liep mijn Plato-filiaal binnen en was verkocht. Of nee, deze cd was verkocht. Mayra Andrade is een heel jonge vrouw, afkomstig van de Kaap-Verdische eilanden. Ze was nog geen twintig jaar toen Charles Aznavour haar vroeg om een duet met hem te zingen voor zijn nieuwste album. En hij was niet de enige die talent in haar zag: ook Cesaria Evora en Chico Buarque zijn zeer lovend over haar. Mayra heeft op verschillende plekken in de wereld gewoond (Cuba, Brazilië, Kaap-Verdië en Parijs), en dat hoor je op haar debuutplaat. Invloeden zijn afro, jazz en samba, en maken dit tot een zeer prettig in het gehoor liggend wereldpop album waarop de nadruk op Braziliaans getinte arrangementen ligt. De instrumentatie is merendeels akoestisch: percussie, gitaren, accordeon, piano en Farfisa. En allemachtig wat een heerlijke stem. Mayra zingt voornamelijk in het Kaap-Verdisch, met uitzondering van Comme s’Il En Pleuvait. Een favoriet liedje noemen kan ik niet, of het moet het titelstuk zijn, of het afsluitende Regasu of Nha Nobréza, Tunuka of het lieflijke Mana. Kortom: deze hele plaat is van hemelse schoonheid. De foto van Mayra Andrade op het hoesje trouwens ook. Als La Troba Kung-Fú de leukste zomerfeest-cd van 2007 gemaakt heeft, dan is deze Navega de allermooiste. Deze moet iedere dag een keer in mijn speler. Met dank aan André van mijn Plato-filiaal; hij draaide deze plaat in de winkel en ik was verkocht …

Ouch. I entered the Plato-shop in Apeldoorn and was totally blown away by this cd. Mayra Andrade is a very young woman from the Cape Verdic islands. She wasn’t just twenty years old when Charles Aznavour asked her to sing a duet with him on his latest album. He wasn’t the only one that was aware of her talent: Cesaria Evora and Chico Buarque have been very positive about her. Mayra has lived on many different places on earth (Cuba, Brazil, Cape Verde and Parijs), and you can hear that on her debut album. Influeces are afro, jazz and samba, and they make this a very nice world pop album to listen and relax to. The emphesis is on the Brazilian sounding arrangements. The instrumentation is mostly acoustic: percussion, gitars, accordeon, piano and Farfisa. And wow, what a lovely voice. She sings all songs in Cape-Verdian language, except for Comme s’Il En Pleuvait. I can’t mention a favourite song, but maybe it’s the title track or Regasu, Tunuka or Nha Nobréza, or the sweet Mana. To be short: this whole album is one of heavenly beauty. By the way, Mayra Andrade’s photo on the cover is also gorgeous. If La Troba Kung-Fú has produced the most amusing summer party cd of 2007, then this Navega is the most beautiful one. I really gotta play this cd once everyday. Prachtige traditioneel klinkende samba en bossanova van deze dochter van Joyce (Silveira Palhano de Jesus), de bekende Braziliaanse zangeres. Bijgestaan door onder andere gitarist Celso Fonseca en natuurlijk haar moeder maakt Clara Moreno, ondanks de eenvoudige opzet, een broeierige en opwindende plaat. De eenvoud zit hem in de instrumentatie: enkel de zwoele zang, Een of soms twee akoestische gitaren, en af en toe wat percussie. Meer is er niet nodig. Mijn vrouw vindt het niks, maar ik ga ervoor. Ideaal voor de zondagmorgen of de hete avonden.

Gorgeous traditionally sounding samba and bossa nova is what Clara Moreno offers us on this album. She’s the daughter of Joyce (Silverira Palhano de Jesus), a well known Brazilian singer. She gets help from – among others – guitarist Celso Fonseca and of course her mother. The album is brooding and exciting, despite its simplicity. The simpleness can be found in the instrumentation: just the moody vocal, one or two acoustic guitars, and some percussion every now and then. Nothing more is needed. My wife doesn’t like it at all, but I go for it! Ideal for Sunday morning or your hot nights.

Eigenlijk had ik het een beetje gehad met Porcupine Tree. Daar zit een verhaaltje achter. Toen ik de band ontdekte in 1995, was net het album The Sky Moves Sideways uit en ik viel helemaal voor de psychedelische kant van de band. Het album daarna, Signify, vond ik zelfs nog mooier. Veel albums kwamen daarna, waarvan ik de meeste erg kon waarderen. De laatste twee albums waren in mijn oren ineens te gemeen hard, te ruig, te metal. Het kon me niet zo bekoren, al deed een song als Lazarus me wel weer smelten. Toen vorig jaar de dvd Arriving Somewhere… verscheen en ik die bekeek, was ik toch wel weer onder de indruk.
Welnu, deze nieuwe Fear Of A Blank Planet is fenomenaal. Het ‘harde’ geluid voelt beter geïntegreerd in de muziek. Tuurlijk, Steven Wilson trekt af en toe flink van leer op de gitaar en op die momenten beukt de herrie je kamer in, maar het is veel beter in balans met de rustiger passages, die zowaar ouderwets psychedelisch aandoen. Favoriete liedje hier is de afsluiter Sleep Together, waarin zelfs een strijkje komt opdraven. Daarnaast zijn er gastbijdragen van Alex Lifeson en Robert Fripp. Het album is ook verschenen als speciale editie, met een bonus-dvd waarop de hele plaat is geremixed in DTS 5.1 en met een veertig pagina’s tellend boekwerk. Zwaar aanbevolen!

To be honest: I was kinda fedup with Porcupine Tree. There’s a short story to that. When I discovered the band in 1995, their album The Sky Moves Sideways had just been released and I totally fell in love with the psychadelic side of the band. I even liked the album’s follow-up, Signify, better. Lots of other album followed, most of them I liked very much. Porcupine Tree’s last two albums suddenly sounded way too meanly loud, too rough, too metal in my ears. That was nothing for me, even though a song like Lazarus made me melt in the old-fashioned way. Last year, when the dvd Arriving Somewhere… was released, and when I watched that, I was very impressed again.
Tell you what? This new Fear Of A Blank Planet is fenomenal. The ‘hard’ sound feels way better integrated in their music. Of course, Steven Wilson rams his guitar heavily every now and then, and on those moments the noise splatters into your room, but this time it’s way much better balanced with the more easy parts, the parts that even sound old-fashionly psychadelic. My favorite song is the album’s final Sleep Together, in which a string orchestra is featured. On the album there are also guest appearances by Alex Lifeson en Robert Fripp. There’s also a special version of the album with a bonus-dvd on which you find a DTS 5.1 remix and with a fourty pages booklet. Heavily recommended!

La Troba Kung-Fú is het nieuwe project van zanger-accordeonist Joan Garriga. U weet wel, van de band Dusminguet die verantwoordelijk was voor de aanstekelijkste Spaanse mestizomuziek. Nadat Dusminguet in 2003 ophield te bestaan, heeft Garriga een nieuwe band samengesteld die het begrip wereldmuziek een nieuwe dimensie geeft. Clavell Morenet is een groot feest. Je hoort verschillende genres zoals Catalaanse rumba, reggae, cumbia, salsa, vallenato en rock. Hoogtepunt van de plaat vind ik zelf het springerige Oriente Miedo waarin een verslavende accordeon de hoofdrol vervult. Kijk ook op de website van de band, www.latrobakungfu.net !!! Die is net zo mooi als het album …

La Troba Kung-Fú is the new project by singer-accordeonist Joan Garriga. Remember him, from the band Dusminguet? That band was responsible for the most infective Spanish mestizomusic. After Dusminguet’s existance stopped in 2003, Garriga formed a new band, in which the term ‘world music’ gets a new dimension. Clavell Morenet is one big party. One hears different styles like Catalonian rumba, reggae, cumbia, salsa, vallenato and rock. To me, the highlight of the album is the jumpy tune Oriente Miedo in which an addictive accordeon plays the lead role. Please visit the band’s website www.latrobakungfu.net !!!
